I have several Bass books by Ed Friedland published by Hal Leonard. What I've found with all of them is you can go through the exercises and be satisfied with what they present or use them as a starting point, to explore and expand more possibilities and information then given in the lessons. For me it has made learning how to play the bass personal and with the help of these books it has made it doable. This book is no exception. In my opinion it will guide me through how bass lines are are formed and used, but it will be up to me explore more. I do feel however that basic music theory and sight reading would be a big help for those thinking about getting it. I would place this book as an advanced beginner. Great book, looking forward to working more with it.

Shorter than I expected but it didn't take long to realize that it's packed in spite of this simplicity; bare bones instructions, Ed lays out how you'll get the most from it & his words are to be taken seriously (although most of us try to skirt the "rules" on most everything!). The workbook aspect--reading music, transcribing the CD tracks, fiddling w/ creating one's own lines--makes it well worth the time. I haven't even made it to the halfway point but am already experiencing, hearing, and approaching playing differently. I mean that in a good way. I probably should have purchased this when I first heard about, would have advanced my abilities a lot faster, but now is as good a time as any.

The photo for this item clearly shows a box in the upper-right corner that states "CD INCLUDED". Book did not come with a CD, but has "AUDIO ACCESS INCLUDED" instead with "To access audio files, go to:" printed on Page 1. I would NOT have made this purchase if the description of this product were accurate. Ed Friedland's lessons contained in this book are excellent.

It teaches enough that you come away knowing how little you know about the subject. Nevertheless, if you are in situation where you suddenly need to back a jazz blues jam or Autumn Leaves, you ought to do fine.As an alternative to the provided backing tracks, you might wish try iReal Pro--you can set up the chords and let the app play backing tracks for you.

I purchased this book based on the strength of the reviews. I was looking for a book to help learn how to play the bass, and to strengthen my understanding of what notes are where on the neck of the bass. The book stands as an excellent resource for learning how to construct bass lines over chord changes found in Jazz and similar styles. It begins simple, teaching you about finding and playing the root of the chord, and the fifth and octave. As you advance through the book, you begin to learn variations on these - different methods of approaching the root and fifth, as well as scales and arpeggios. Some sections explicitly lay out the notes to play, and more advanced sections simply give you the chord changes so that you can apply what you've learned in the prior lesson.Friedland also uses the book as a sort of crash course in music theory. In this, I believe the book suffers some. There is a lone page dedication to chord building, showing most of the variations of a C chord (major, minor, diminished, augmented, and the 7th variations of those). This is the only place where the chords are explicitly spelled out, if you aren't familiar enough with the notes in a given key to build a chord on your own, you might have a rough time of it. If you have a list of the key signatures in front of you, this weakness can be nullified or worked around. Obviously, if you have enough musical background to build the chords on your own, this isn't an issue at all. One of the negative reviewers comments that all of the examples are in C - if he only meant the "Basics of Chord Construction" section, then it's true, otherwise Friedland meanders across a wide variety of chords and keys.If you are looking for a book with tablature, don't look here. Some might find this a weakness, but I believe it to be a strength. In order to really understand how to construct your own bass lines, and to give yourself the freedom to move around the neck, being able to read music and understand the chords beyond simple numbers on a line is essential. I don't mind tabs, but I prefer to read the more descriptive standard notation as much as possible. All in all, a strong book, especially if you can construct chord spellings (or are capable of finding how yourself).

This book explained the principals of walking bass and made it clear to me. I have taken the course slowly and played along the music that was given.

Great book on how to build walking bass lines. He takes you through the basics all the way to using the chords and scales to build your lines. You have exercises to do where you use the principles you just learned to build your own bass lines - great way to learn how to do this since there is no "school" solution. While the books is jazzed focus the principles apply to rock as well. I have found it to be an excellent book for a novice bass player.

Ed's book is a classic in this genre. If you get his ideas under your fingers you will have a solid de facto knowledge of walking Bass linesOnce you get done with his lessons purchase a fake book is The Real Book and use those cord charts to expand those concepts
