If you're looking for a captivating collection of Aztec myths, then pay attention....

The Aztecs believed offerings of human blood and human lives were necessary to the continued running of the universe. Indeed, in Aztec myths, the gods themselves make sacrifices of their own blood and even of their entire bodies in order to create a universe humans can live in and, in one story, to create humans themselves; humans therefore must make blood sacrifices in turn to feed the gods and to keep the universe in existence.Â

To the ancient Aztecs, these practices seemed fitting, necessary, and honorable, helping to connect the world of humans to the divine world of the gods, a universe that in Aztec myth took shape in cycles of creation, destruction, and rebirth.

Easy to read and straight to the information I wanted to learn. Interested in reading more from the author. Highly recommended

This book covers the area of central Mexico from around the 9th to the 16th century. The Aztecs were a powerful nation but, like any empire, they started, grew and eventually died out (thanks to diseases and violence from the Spanish attackers.)Christianity was forced upon the Aztecs and most of their writings were destroyed. The book covers the myths of various gods and goddesses which includes the creation of the world, blood sacrifices, ritual warfare, the afterlife and other topics. Ritual sacrifice is perhaps the main thing that distinguishes the Aztecs. Political myths are also covered including what the Aztecs thought of the Toltec people and how they considered themselves so much better than them. The Aztecs also had their own calendar. Two things that struck me about their myths was that they mentioned the existence of giants which seems to be something that you can find in mythos of many countries all around the world. Another thing that is common to many countries is the story of a great flood (the story of which goes back to the ancient Sumerian civilization and others.)The book also includes a glossary and a bibliography. It has a number of very useful maps and is written in an easy-to-understand manner. I also like the use of actual stories/myths from their time.

This is a great read and a definite page-turner for those interested even a little bit in the Aztecs. It brought together for me all of the Aztec gods and the conflicting creation stories. I have often observed that the Aztec descendants resemble the Inuit people of the north in coloring and appearance, however their respective languages and creation stories do not appear to have a common origin. This book even explains their beliefs concerning time and before time began (recently of great interest to those predicting the end of the world).

It is sad that such a advance nation could be bought down by so called civilized men. Better weapon and biological warfare destroyed a entire people .. The explanations of what they believed was fascinating.

Good information

Accurate as I had learned the tales as a child. I loved it very very much so. Thank you. C/S

Thank You. I need the myths! I need them all! This is a really good start. Apparently every author who writes a book about Aztecs has heard all the myths but just wants to keep summarizing them. Thank you for giving me full stories. We need a real good compilation of Aztec myths, the same way that you can get all the Greek myths in one book. This book gives me what I want and need to have a better knowledge about these mysterious people. It is likely that their stories are truer than other religions. Some of these myths really make sense.
